Theatre is Back in New Buffalo!

A new theater opens in New Buffalo this summer, and its teaming up a former resident and classmate – Jon Putzke with current resident and former faculty member Betty Turner.

Jon, an NB graduate well-known to many of us for his years of producing and directing plays for The Gateway Players, Scotty’s Dinner Playhouse and Tin Tree — will spearhead the new Harbor Country Community Theatre as its producer and artistic director.

Putzke also directed neighboring community-theater productions for Dunes Arts Foundation, Footlight Players, South Bend Civic and the Twin City Players.

Since moving to Florida in 1982, Puztke continued his theatrical career, directing for the Vero Beach Theater Guild, Riverside Theater, Uptown Dinner Theater, Musicana, Arena Dinner Theater, Encore Alley and Sanseurs Noble, with more than 400 productions to his credit.

He is in his fifth year as artistic director for the Atlantic Shakespeare Festival in St. Augustine, Fla.

Putzke will produce and direct the first production in the all new state-of-the art Performing Arts Center at the new high school facility in New Buffalo. Betty has the lead in performing back stage duties. She is well experienced in stage management as many of us remember from our "school days".

Known as the Harbor Country Community Theater, their first show is Neil Simon's "Proposals".

Tickets go on sale June 22 at the box office in the atrium of the NEW HIGH SCHOOL's Performing arts Center. Box Office hours will be noon to 6:00 p.m. Fridays , Saturdays noon to 8:00 pm and noon to 2:00 pm Sundays. Reservations can be made in person or by calling 616.469.2770 ext 6047. beginning June 22.

Individual ticket price is $15.00. Discounts available for large groups.

The show will run 6 Saturday nights 8:00 PM from Saturday, June 30 through August 4th. Four Sunday Matinees at 2:00 in July 8,15,22,29

In other Theatre news...

Jody (Moulik) Chapin, class of '69 graduate now working and living in Savannah, Georgia, recently directed the City Lights Theatre Company's production of My Fair Lady. The show opened the weekend of March 23 and ran through April 7, 2001.

Jody is a co-founder of the City Lights Theatre Company and was active in High School and New Buffalo area theatre (Gateway Players) in the 60s. She is also a news/weather anchor on WTCO TV Savannah.
