$100,000 gift prompts New Buffalo scholarship fund
NEW BUFFALO The Second Homeowners Scholarship Fund for New Buffalo graduates has been established with an anonymous gift of $100,000 to the Berrien Community Foundation, which will administer and manage the fund, according to a foundation spokesperson. Interest on the fund will be used for scholarships awarded yearly to graduates of New Buffalo High School. Based on the Berrien Community Foundation's history, the $100,000 scholarship fund should generate 6 percent per year, making approximately $6,000 available for scholarships each year. "We are extremely grateful for this generous gesture by one of our community's second homeowners," said Superintendent Michael Lindley. According to the donor's wishes, the recipients will be selected by the Second Homeowners Scholarship Advisory Committee made up of three to five Berrien County residents, with preference to New Buffalo area residents. Initial members of the committee are Richard Adamec, Robert Heit and Nadra Kissman. Academic advisers to the committee will be the principal of New Buffalo High School and the superintendent of New Buffalo Area Schools. Persons wishing to designate contributions to the Second Homeowners Scholarship Fund may do so through the Berrien Community Foundation, 2900 S. State St., Suite 2E., St. Joseph, MI 49085. Donations to the Foundation are eligible for favorable Michigan tax credits.
